As an aside, I have a theory that "measuring...by their own standards" is associated with TV. Nowadays, we know when someone is acting odd--the laugh track tells us. There was a time, perhaps, when people were just different and accepted as such. Sure, there were the real odballs, but maybe there was a lot of latitude in being OK?
Sometimes I believe that...then I think of the education indoctrination their getting. Preschool through college. That's a major difference; Heck there was a major difference between my HS graduation date 78 curriculum and my younger brothers curriculum graduation dates in the 80's.
