Here’s the rub though; if you go back & kill baby Hitler - & eliminate The Holocaust- you remove the main driving reason the nation of Israel was reformed/reconstituted after going out of existence over 2,000yrs ago.
I think more often than not, it's about more than the person. If you get rid of Hitler pre-genocide, you have not gotten rid of the conditions that gave us a Hitler. (And then a Stalin)
.
"what OTHER rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"
.
perhaps the right answer is not, go back in time and kill Hitler, but rather go back in time and work for a better, fairer peace-ending for World War One? For all we know, Nobel Peace Prize winner Woodrow Wilson would be a better candidate for assassination.
If it's a time machine, could one not just go back and kill Artist Hitler or Beer Hall Putsch Hitler? Or, if you want a semi-justifiable reason, "I can't believe he just invaded Poland" Hitler.
Although as another said, Wilson may be a good candidate. He gave us the Fed, the income tax, and dragged us into World War I. FDR and his mutilation of the Constitution via judicial fiat is another. LBJ also qualifies, with his useless, currency-debasing Great Society and Vietnam boondoggle. The three of them are at the root of most of our current societal ills.

Something to think about.
If not Hitler, then it would have been Goring or Goebbels or someone else. It was the legacy from WWI and before.
Have you ever seen the Elem Klimov film “Come and See”? The film ends with a masterful take on the question you raise here.

"the nation that leads the free world"
Who exactly is this free world you speak of? If this nation leads it, why are the others not all following?
Maybe you shouldn't be conserving that Wilsonian kool-aid.
I’ll definitely give George Washington a machine gun
