Drive a car, I'll tax the street, Try to sit, I'll tax your seat, Get too cold I'll tax the heat, Take a walk, I'll tax your feet. Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman...
The most egregious example of bad tax policy is the taxation of social security benefits. I've been retired for several years, and when I file my federal income tax return, I see 85% of my Social Security benefits being taxed. That money was taxed years ago (in fact, it was taxed throughout my working career), and here it is being taxed again. One of the fundamental principles of sound tax policy is that the same income never gets taxed twice. Yet our federal government doesn't seem to understand that.
My favorites are taxes levied on my previously taxed income. Gasoline, cable TV, cellphone service, automobile excise, etc, etc. All of these taxes paid with money that has already been taxed.
Well Michael at least in Utah you can see the evidence of where your tax money is going and what it is being, mostly wisely, spent on. The same goes for us here in Idaho. We are not a tax haven by any stretch but you can see the evidence daily of the effective usage of the tax revenue and when there is a surplus it is returned to us either directly or through lowered property taxes the following year. This is something I could not see when I lived in California....
Taxation at any level is theft
You're already familiar with and welcome in Texas!!! Would love to have you join us!!
