The media narrative about it at the time was very convincing: "Elderly black scholar harassed by police merely for trying to get into his own home." Obama surely used this to add punch to the racial division he was creating.

Philando Castile had a license to carry concealed, so I don't know what you think made him such a dubious character. The cop, though he was acquitted, was fired because the shoot wasn't righteous. Breonna Taylor was killed because of dirty cops, lying on the warrant application and conducting a no-knock raid that was 100% unjustified. They were all fired as well, though they never were truly held accountable.
Leftist / progressive insurrectionism in Minnesota has a long history. Trade unionism's earliest supporters and agitators called Duluth and, later, Minneapolis home. The Scandinavian socialists there organized one of the first branches of the communist party in America.
The IWW (the Wobblies, the "one big union") planted its roots there and spread rapidly to Pittsburgh and the other steel / coal towns in the Mon and Ohio valleys. Clarence Hathaway, Joe van Nordstrand, Eugene Debs, "Mother" Mary Harris Jones ... all had roots in MN, all had strong ties to Russian communism, and all were heavily involved with the early days of unionism in American heavy manufacturing.

All legal niceties and controversies aside I am convinced that the fathomless stupidity of going into those days-old, ongoing riots carrying a pistol disqualifies that idiot from any sympathy. What was he doing armed in those circumstances? What did he intend to do with that automatic pistol?
