Maybe I shouldn't mention I was at the 1972 Ole Miss vs LSU, (Bert Jones vs Archie Manning) game? Easy, boy, easy. I know that must've been a tough one for you but... Seriously, I enjoy your perspective and takes on the American scene. Great writing.

You didn't go far enough. The NIL and transfer portal have been progressive means to infect college sports with their ideologies. We should go back to the way it was. BTW, I was at UF when Steve Spurrier was the QB, so I'll be a Gator Fan for the remainder of my earthly existence, and I was at the game when the Gators beat the Bear coached Tide.

Yes, your concerns are valid. That UGA-FSU game was a complete disaster, and, I think, a harbinger of things to come. The Dr Pepper portal commercial captures the current mindset: we call always get another quarterback.

I began my graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma in August 1988 in the wake of the scandal caused by the frank revelations of ex-Sooner Brian Bosworth and before the fall of coach Barry Schwitzer. Not being from the South I was struck by the seriousness with which the people of OU regarded football, which was more of a religion than a mere game. By the time I completed my Ph.D I finally could relish the fact that in 1993 the Sooners become the Texas State Champion team by winning the key three Texas games.
