An interesting book by Mark Bauerlein came out in February. Its title is THE DUMBEST GENERATION GROWS UP: From Stupified Youth to Dangerous Adults.

A pilot friend, ex Air Force, is still in touch with his Air Force friends who stayed in. A psychologist friend said the Canadian forces fighter pilots would see him weekly. These were the trainees. Fighter pilots are supposedly the top of the top. IQ wise, physicality, etc. these young fighter pilots would CRY for an hour every week in his office. He said almost none of them can handle any pressure. He doesn’t have a clue what would happen in a battle situation. He assumes most would turn tail and fly back to base.

I've noticed that as well - very fragile. Things people my age consider just another daily event are existential crises for the littles.

We finally hired someone good. Who came through a friend. And we hired an assistant. The assistant is nice. The job ended, we sold out the project. So she has moved on. But she crumbled under any pressure. And I’m talking mild pressure. She would have to go home if anything out of the ordinary happened. It was weird.

It’s not as bad here in Canada but we too see this. I interviewed a young woman with little experience for a sales manager job. Two people only, so not really management. Just her and an assistant. We asked what salary she expected. She would not work for less than $100,000 a year - plus bonuses. She also wanted to know how soon she could take a holiday. She was extreme but a number of young women came in to the interview with ridiculous expectations.

Similar situation happened to me. I was hiring a guy as a technician. I called one of his former employers for a reference check and his old supervisor said, "You will be lucky to get him to work for you." I said, "Great, that is good news!" His former supervisor said, "You don't understand, I meant you will be lucky to get him to work at all..."

That’s funny. I hired one young guy. I gave him a great opportunity to work as my sons assistant. My son runs the company. If he had worked out in three years he could have gone on and opened up his own real estate development company. His father is rich and the kid is very well connected. The sky was the limit. He lasted about six weeks and quit. No notice. He didn’t show up for work. He had flown home to Montreal to stay with his Mom.
