The Extreme Vanity of Mitt Romney
McKay Coppin's fawning biography of the Democrats favorite "Republican" accidentally reveals more than just Romney's self-righteousness.
I was stopped cold by a quote I saw this morning.
McKay Coppins has written a fawning, slavering biography of Democrats favorite Republican, Mitt Romney, in which Coppins relates that Romney said:
"A very large portion of my party really doesn’t believe in the Constitution."
That caused me to try to divine the context, and of course, it was related to J6, which was a protest because people felt the Constitution was not being followed and their grievances regarding the irregularities were not being heard. For the months following the election, people were begging Congress to just take a look at the irregularities, they weren’t trying overturn an election
The people attending that rally weren't there to overturn the Constitution, they were there to assure it was being followed when it appeared they were being ignored.
Coppins doesn't say what Romney specifically meant by alleging the GOP doesn’t believe in the Constitution - no instances were mentioned because just saying "J6" as become the complete catch-all for "destroying democracy", no further specifics are needed.
Coppins also relates that Romney has a fear of his own mortality - extending to a potential assassination. Newsflash Mittens - you are certainly disliked, but nobody cares enough about you to kill you. That's your vanity and self-righteousness talking, buddy. You are a non-factor because your own fecklessness and hatred of Trump killed your career. You didn’t retire due to principle, you knew the people of Utah weren’t going to assuage your hurt feelings and send you back to DC. They have had enough of your posturing and preening smugness.
But the most interesting thing to me was something Coppins wrote in a September 2023 article in The Atlantic regarding Romney's fear or assassination, not regarding Romney's fear but about what was known about J6. Coppins wrote about an exchange on January 2nd, four days before the rally gone bad on the 6th:
On January 2nd, Romney receives a text message from Angus King, the junior senator from Maine: “Could you give me a call when you get a chance? Important.”
Romney then calls King who “informs him of a conversation he’s just had with a high-ranking Pentagon official.” Coppins adds:
"Law enforcement has been tracking online chatter among right-wing extremists who appear to be planning something bad on the day of Donald Trump’s upcoming rally in Washington, D.C. The president has been telling them the election was stolen; now they’re coming to steal it back. There’s talk of gun smuggling, of bombs and arson, of targeting the traitors in Congress who are responsible for this travesty. Romney’s name has been popping up in some frightening corners of the internet, which is why King needed to talk to him. He isn’t sure Romney will be safe."
Romney then quickly turns around and sends Cocaine Mitch McConnell this text:
"In case you have not heard this, I just got a call from Angus King, who said that he had spoken with a senior official at the Pentagon who reports that they are seeing very disturbing social media traffic regarding the protests planned on the 6th. There are calls to burn down your home, Mitch; to smuggle guns into DC, and to storm the Capitol. I hope that sufficient security plans are in place, but I am concerned that the instigator—the President—is the one who commands the reinforcements the DC and Capitol police might require."
It's not so much that, as the libs say - without evidence - Romney deduces Trump is behind it, is the “instigator” but what surprised me is that DC law enforcement, which would necessarily mean the Capitol police, the DC police AND the FBI, knew that it was possible the protest would get out of hand and did nothing.
It has been further confirmed by retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg that President Donald Trump did in fact request National Guard troops be deployed in Washington D.C. to protect the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Seems a bit contradictory that the alleged kingpin of this “insurrection” would be calling for the National Guard to be deployed against his troops, doesn’t it?
Pelosi had to have this intel - probably earlier than Angus King - and she did nothing.
Dear God in Heaven, this entire sordid episode in American history is a Democrat/NeverTrump generated and initiated fraud. If you don’t know that by now, you are an accomplice.
The whole J6 Nothingburger is kept aloft by a complicit media and feckless grifters like Mitt Romney. No matter how much evidence indicates that at worst a few "good old boys" got over their skis and when invited into the Capitol roamed around like tourists who'd slipped their paid guide and wanted a peek behind the scenes. The damage done and the one death pales in comparison to the year of nightly riots my former hometown Portland Oregon suffered. That there are people rotting in jail who did little or nothing, that there were clearly inside actors egging on the participants, that Donald Trump had requested National Guard troops, that the death of Brian Siknik was ginned up to a bloody froth is disgusting. The truth is not allowed to be told. Spare me the "threat to our democracy" canard. A) We are in a Constitutional Republic B) There was no threat C) Trump could hardly have created an insurrection as in an armed attack on the government since he was the government and there were no arms found D) Those who destroyed multiple communities through violent riots have been given a pass.
Romney was such a disappointment to me. I sadly bought his squeaky clean Mormon demeanor. He actually is a thin skinned self absorbed *****
The Republicans are showing their usual fecklessness by not conducting hearings on the many examples of how the J6 riots were instigated by the feds as caught on dozens of video cameras with the complicity of the Capitol Police who are seen waiving protesters into the Capitol. Salt Lake resident "Jayden" Sullivan filmed the murder of Ashli Babbitt as a "reporter" wearing a MAGA hat after filming himself walking by numerous police who did nothing to impede his entrance. He was the same Antifa protestor calling for rioters to attack the White House months earlier which led the Secret Service to move the first family to the bunker.
