Philip Dru Democrats
In the Democrat mind, little has changed in 150 years.
Have you noticed that while Democrats consider themselves to be "progressive', their thinking has not really evolved in about 150 years?
When I think about it, the Democrats' policies and perspectives are more congruent to policies and perspectives of the late 1800's. Their positions on free speech, the Constitution and the presidency are virtually identical to those of Woodrow Wilson. I would also argue their views on racism are very much like Wilson's, just with a different race as the target.
Allegedly, one of Wilson's favorite books was "Philip Dru: Administrator: A Story of Tomorrow, 1920-1935" a futuristic political novel written by Edward Mandell House and published in 1912. According to Goodreads, “The story is about a man, Philip Dru, who leads a revolt against the United States government because it had become too corrupt. After the revolution, he scraps the Constitution and makes himself “Administrator.” He then changes every concept of national and state governments to reflect his view of governance.”
In the book, Dru is sort of an Ubermensch who "leads the democratic western United States in a civil war against the plutocratic East. After becoming the dictator of the country, he steps down having turned the US into 'Socialism as dreamed of by Karl Marx'".
Dru is the anthesis of John Galt.
Wikipedia lists several of the policies Dru championed:
- Federal Incorporation Act, with government and labor representation on the board of every corporation
- Public service corporations must share their net earnings with government
- Government ownership of all telegraphs
- Government ownership of all telephones
- Government representation in railroad management
- Co-operative marketing and land banks
- Free employment bureaus
- Labor not to be a commodity
- Government arbitration of industrial disputes
- Government ownership of all healthcare
The book tries to justify taking away individual liberties to make government more efficient and “save” democracy.
Today’s Democrats have the same goals as Philip Dru.

Envy never dies.
