There is one thing about human nature that underlies a lot of this desire to "remodel" us: our inherent desire to pursue our own interests and those of people important to us. The remodelers want to tell us to serve the interests of others that they pick for us to the exclusion of our own interests.
I know there is a reluctance to point this out out of concern for being labeled "selfish," as people who pursue only their own interests at the expense of others or with no concern for others. I believe this is a false choice and that there is a healthy self-interest that involves pursuing your own interests without oppressing others. We can pursue our interests while being benevolent, charitable and concerned for others.
Woodrow Wilson was a devout Baptist, and committed to the conceit of being able to improve man. He even internationalized it, with the belief that America could redeem the world by remaking it in our image.
Nothing in the Judeo-Christian tradition has ever captured this better than the ancient Greeks did with the word hubris.
What if some scientist actually studied the benefits of humanity to the planet? We are every bit as integral to its design as the other animals, the plants and such. We also have an eternal purpose, but we are not merely the blight to the earth that the atheists and anti humanists assert.
