I was plunking around the Innertoobs digging up information to fill in some gaps in my thoughts about why we have classes of people who are seemingly against every single damn thing and in that process of surfing, I ran across a Yale University report that sent me down a particular rabbit hole.
It was a 2017 Yale article about a survey of 12,000 adults and children in the United States showing that many people have lost a close connection with nature.
The article notes:
“The study, conducted by the public relations and marketing firm DJ Case and Associates in conjunction with state and federal wildlife and park agencies, underlines what many people have intuitively known for years: that the increasing use of computers, smart phones, televisions, and other technology, coupled with a growing movement from rural areas, is pulling many Americans away from the natural world. ‘It is increasingly normal to spend little time outside, the report states.”
When people are protected from immutable laws for a long period of time, it is no surprise that they become so unaware of the penalties those laws impose, they will rebel against the means we use to protect us from those penalties.
Various (and powerful) groups seek to destroy modern life, believing in some sort of past natural Utopia that is purely hypothetical in nature. It never existed. The basic argument of these groups is that a primitive life away from the modern world is healthier and more desirable - but the evidence strongly suggests that this is a privileged fantasy.
Sometimes – more often now than ever – we modern humans take for granted how truly privileged we are. I do believe there has never been a better time to be alive, to raise a family and to live to a ripe old age, living a healthy, satisfying, and productive life but a large and growing segment of humanity seems hell bent on destroying that possibility for everybody.
We normally think of an anarchist as someone who seeks to overturn civil government, but the dictionary definition of anarchism is “a political philosophy and movement that is against all forms of authority.”
The most basic form of authority is nature itself.
There are rules we follow because we do not have the power to break them. Fire burns, water wets, and strictures like the male/female reproductive dichotomy, the law of gravity, the weather, our need for oxygen (in a fairly narrow band – too little and we suffocate, too much and it is poison), cold and heat, these are things we may be able to use human inventions to hold in abeyance, but when stripped of human innovations, we are just as naked and exposed as the first humans.
So, it seems not to be much of a stretch that there are people who form a sort of “Gaia Anarchy” who seek to break every law of nature to destroy civilization as a whole and replace it with some hypothetical way of being.
We see the rebellion in transgenderism, communism, the war against hydrocarbon fuels, and especially the war against “Nature and Nature’s God” who gave us our natural rights as humans.
It is an unwinnable war they wage.
But having been held ignorant of reality for their entire lives, they do not understand that and the damage they can and will do in their Quixotic quest.
Even after they have destroyed everything and humanity is again naked, cold, and living in caves, gravity will still be gravity, water will still be wet, and fire will still burn.
A great reminder of what REALLY matters in our lives, symbiosis wt nature. Like shaking someone out of a trance this little reality check brings one back to center. Thank you for that refreshing shake and reminder of just how synthetic our culture has become.Take away energy for a month or two & see how long many of us continue to survive.
All points good. I think what these Twilight Zone people haven't figured out is the logical conclusion of their unhinged utopian goals is the end of the human race. Including them. But the WEF crowd DOES seek a substantial reduction in population, like -80%.
I just read that the last coal powered power plant in New England has been shut down. Region is now reliant on solar and wind.
A hailstorm in Houston wiped out an enormous solar farm. Like rebuilding the George Floyd/Freddie Gray bridge in Baltimore, it's going to take a long time to replace the damaged panels. Very dependent on China for parts.
Anyone paying attention to the lawlessness and violence in our blue cities knows that we live under a very thin veneer of civilized behavior.
"Nasty, brutish, and short" comes to mind.
